Back to School in Haiti

Dear Faithful Friends,

Although we still have a month or so of summer, it’s time to be thinking again of kids going back to school. The schools in Nan wo and Kawo are beginning to purchase notebooks, pens, pencils, paper, books, and have uniforms sewn for the kids.  It’s a little more complicated than getting ready for school here as each of the children getting measured for their new uniforms.  Old uniforms are passed down to younger siblings or friends.  Shoes need to be found for each child also.  And then there are new ribbons or barrettes for the girl’s hair.  It’s an exciting and busy time for everyone.

This month the schools are putting on camp for about 100 kids.  The kids will be asked to pay a small amount for the camp, but most are unable to do so; therefore we are helping with some of the costs.  For four or five days, the kids, ranging in age from 11 to 20, will be learning more about God, playing games, singing and just having a wonderful time.  This is a very, very special time for them, so I ask that you will be in much prayer for these children during this time.

It may have seemed quiet during July, but we have been busy.  Several of us went to Northshore Baptist Church and shared with a large group about HOPE in Haiti.  They received us wonderfully well and more children were sponsored.  Also HOPE in Haiti was the mission focus for the kids at Cascade Community Church’s Vacation Bible School. They raised about $600 for the schools in Haiti.  They bought soccer balls with some of it, and the rest will go for supplies for the schools.  Crosswater Community Church also had HOPE in Haiti as their focus for VBS and it was my privilege to speak to four different groups of kids.  I loved their interest and their comments.  Some thought we could solve the hunger problem by just bringing all the people to the United States to live.  Some couldn’t believe the children didn’t even have snacks in addition to their one or two meals a day.  It was delightful to hear their thoughts and ideas. Hopefully their little hearts were sparked with the desire to help or even go someday.  I love that our kids here want to reach out to the kids in Haiti.  Thank you, parents, for your example.

We are planning a trip to Haiti October 21st through 29th.  If you are interested in going with us or helping with needed supplies or the financing for this trip, please let us know.  We need to raise money to build a church/school in Nan wo, which we will work on while we are there. We will also update our records and get updated pictures on all the children attending school while we are there.

We have Big News at Hope in Haiti that we want to share with you!  By popular demand, we are now accepting child sponsorships online through PayPal and automatic bank drafts! Please watch for an email with more details coming your way soon. In the meantime these options are currently available on our website. If you would like to get a jump start on this opportunity please visit us at hopeinhaiti.org.

With all that is happening within our ministry (another trip to Haiti in October and the addition of online electronic payment options) I’m excited as God continues to go before us.

Bless each one of you.

Dixie
